Scene 1: Sylvian Patrick somehow thought he had escaped Malcaluffin’s quiz, retorted: “Hasta la vista, babies” and left for a ten day vacation to Indonesia, Malaysia and where else…
Scene 2: Pantan is back with revenge. This is what he had to say: “You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am”
Scene 3: Sylvian Patrick again, after his vacation – “fasten your seatbelts, lads.. this could be a bumpy ride”.
And lo he came… amidst the raging rains.. The Dragon Warrior himself.
After a bout of coughing, softly the great man said: “They call me Mr.Malcaluffin. Say hello to my little friend!”

Roundup of the IQL meeting dated 14th November 2009 November 16, 2009

A popular saying goes, the minute they dig three stumps on a cricket pitch, a small cloud multiplies and brings rain out of nowhere. I think we’d like to share the same umbrella for IQL meetings; even as I compose this piece, I can hear thunderclouds bumping into each other, taking photographs from up above with flashes of lightning. With last week’s quizzes being washed out, we quizzers became children again (coincidentally on Children’s day) chanting, “rain, rain go away… come again some other day”!!
Whether the rain gods heard our prayers or the sun god came to our rescue – the argument continues. But we were blessed. The sun peeked from behind the dark clouds quick enough for a handful of us to race each other on our bikes to get to the venue.
However, at 4.25 PM:
Murthy (on the phone): “hey bugger, where are you”
KN: “drinking tea, eating biscuits before the big moment. Pantan and Samba are here with me..”
Murthy: “you guys are eating without me?”
KN: “be there in a flash”
I hurriedly swallowed a piece of biscuit that I could have taken 10 seconds to chew on. Sweetened biscuits at that!
What the fish! I hate early birds… I have this sweet tooth, not like Pantan though…
Samba and Pantan took their time however. More fuming from me…
Five minutes later, I fumbled for the keys at door No.8 at the Corporation Complex, our venue. Pantan and Samba came to an IQL meeting after nearly a year and this was their first time at our new venue.
”Exactly, what kind of place is this man?” – Samba whistled. He was impressed by the locality of the venue, not by its looks. I am positive about the second part…
”For all practical purposes, our new venue”, I said and beamed. I was proud of that. IQL had a roof to call its own, at least for the time being.
The meeting started at around 4.55 PM, after a few introductory sessions (Murthy had not met Samba and Pantan), a few Thai jokes and of course, the usual wait for the last minute fellows to come in.
Sana, Yaggy and JK joined us in about ten minutes. The rain started as soon as they stepped inside.
We went around the table, with three laptops it was a bit of confusion at times as to who was quizzing. Samba, Pantan and Sana were busy examining Pantan’s brand new laptop from Thailand. For the others, it was a nice meeting with a series of tough questions, tougher answers and grand fun. We nearly hit the good old days of 2008 when laughter dominated learning.
After Sana’s college quiz, Yaggy and Murthy showed us their class with top class questions. I did my PONT-ing quiz (Pictures Only No Text-ing). The name speaks for itself. Samba wound up our meeting with a food and drink quiz.
Overall we had loads of fun. The effect of the movie 2012 releasing in Chennai told on the weather; Pantan, Murthy and Sana left at around 6.30 after a nice mix of quizzes.
The rest of us left half an hour later, satisfied that we could get answer quite a few questions.
As Samba and I rode back home, the rain lashed at our faces angry that we had escaped its wrath.
Some questions from the meeting, a few photos will adorn this post soon…

…you’ll smell the smoke as someone bags all the points. We hope for your sake that you are that guy getting everything, in which case, happy watching the others fume!!
…you’ll hear shouting from a fight about to break out discussing a question/ answer. Better yet, you might be the guy fighting to win!!
…you’ll help yourself gain more confidence, and help the person who has lost his.
… you’ll be able to hear your own heartbeat go “dhak, dhak” as you race to the finish to win the quiz. Yay!!
…you’ll be able to set your own standards and prove to your friends and most importantly test your quiz reflexes.
…Pantan is back in India, and he has promised to sponsor a prize for the best quizzer of this meeting – Hold your breath for: a date with Pantan!!
Saving the best for last, quizzing will be more like living and less like watching television. Provided you don’t sell TVs for a living, this should hold good!!
For the remaining 94 reasons, you might have to come to the meetings and find out for yourselves. Maybe, we’ll even let you write those down for us…
Here’s how you can make it to the meeting:
4.30 PM this Saturday, Nov 14, 2009. Unless you’ve promised your kid that you’ll take him out or something. And of course, our very own Rain God who promised to be nice to us this weekend!!
Venue: No.8, 2nd Floor, Corporation Complex. Diagonally opp Kaliappa Hospital/ Opposite Arun Ice cream/ Tic tac videos. RA Puram, Chennai 28.

3. Pantan is around, so don’t bring food to the meeting. He’s ever ready to sneak a snack
4. Did we mention 10 questions already?
5. We don’t have a No.5 to this list.

BPCL Quiz by IQL – sometimes its not just the questions… November 9, 2009
Posted by karthikglobalsoul in Events, IQL News.2 comments
Statutory Warning: If you have busy schedules or don’t appreciate humour of any form, I request you not to proceed. For the rest of you, here is the review of the BPCL quiz that KN and me hosted (and backed up by Murthy).
| Questions-Simple | 8 * 5 rounds |
| Audience | 132 + technicians |
| Quiz hosts | 2 |
| Finalists | 16 |
| Fun | 101% |
| Mistakes | Occasionally |
| Satisfaction | 101% |
The ingredients for a perfect quiz. Sometimes it is just not the questions.
Venue: Bharat Petroleum Corp Limited, Anna Nagar.
Occasion: Vigilance Awareness week.
The climate was gloomy but the enthusiastic level inside the auditorium wasn’t. At 10, KN and I were honoured and we clumsily accepted the bouquet offered. The speeches made by the imminent guests were short and sweet (or we dozed off). After all the formalities were done, the stage was set for prelims.
The chairs in the auditorium were arranged in sets of four (members per team) and everyone started discussing from the very first question. I conducted the prelims and made my usual mistake of giving away too many clues. The prelim round of 30 questions (that included 10 hard core BPCL questions) was done within the estimated time of 40 minutes. We had to put up a fight to get the answer sheets back from the participants.
There was a long gap of 2 hours between prelims and finals which gave us enough time for correction.
While correcting a particular question “…. this street (in Chennai) was named after Lord _______?”, everyone had written ridicule answers like Warren and Mountbatten . We laughed over it and it took us few minutes to realize that they understood the “Lord” to be the English designation rather than God. We had to appreciate their “out of box” thinking or make a mockery of our inability to think like the participants. The correct answer was of course, Ranganathan Street in T.Nagar.
The correction was done in 45 minutes and we went to have our lunch. The menu was set for a king and they called it their “regular” lunch menu. We kept talking to participants to keep ourselves awake.
The finalists were cheered when their names were called out and the quiz began.
There was commotion and excitement from the word go. The audience was as thrilled as the finalists and displayed it by calling out KN’s name for every audience question. The rounds were quick and KN carried himself as professional as he could. There was a huge applause for the connect round (on the pictorials on Indian currency) making him blush. It was indeed a moment to cherish!!
There was a close tie between two teams and the team. The team that answered the last question correctly emerged as winners.
Winners:
I place: Mr.A .A . Prabhu Roy,Mr.V.S.Raghavan, Mr.Kani Amudhan,Mr.Nagarajan
II Place: Mr.Koshy Vargese, Mr.G.Ravichandran, Mr.Amit Kumar,Mr.L.Chandrasekaran
III Place:Mr.A.C.Iyer, Mr.Sethuraman,Mrs.Hema Malini, Mr.C.Joseph
IV Place: M/s Lakshmi, Mr.Mukesh .K. Singh, Mr.K.Sethuramalingam,Mr.M.Mohan
Yes, according to them, everybody who qualified was a winner.
After the prize distribution and thank you speeches, the entire auditorium was silent letting both of us to savour the experience of quizzing.
P.S.; Special thanks to Mr.Saieeji of BPCL for letting us conduct this Quiz. And for the audience for being patient enough for nearly 2 hours to know the answers and for appreciating our efforts of hosting the quiz.
