IQL Meet Review – Sep 27 2008 September 27, 2008

(review by Vinod Hariharan)
Do you know the last book Annadurai read?…..or that Bertie Wooster was also a journo?….who Hermann Tilke is..or how did Jahangir see a Dodo?…or how Taliban got their name?….Or at the least, why Samba came on time…Or why was Pantan missing..??
Not a clue..??…Well, you could have definitely got the answers for all of them except the last two (we are still jericho’ed on Samba and Pantan) if you had attended this meeting.
The flock that thronged the premises of Brio in their vivid miens and demeanours would answer to the names of Matti(zipped i/o), JK (wah!, kya kehna!!), Prabhakar (nooo, not the Lankan one..), Sriram (with his cute l’il kid), Samba (Mambo No.4pm?!), Sana (junior dhadi), Yeggy (senior dhadi), KN (kinda looking lost!!..was it an ET, KN?), Sridhar (pattaya kilappittaru), Vishwanathan(hope I got the name right), Patrick (ordered ice tea with me), Subhashree (did she see an ET too??) & umm…this writer (no, i’m yet to see an ET in my life).
We had an infrastructure crisis in the form of a laptop (which did a Lehman) and Yeggy bailed us out by bringing his one (merci beaucoup, monsieur)
And then the show begun, with this writer starting to fiddle with his little box of folded papers with much elan in a purpotedly ostensible show of “team selection”, which was watched intently by the others; just like they would, when Saurav Ganguly comes to bat. He later scuttled the plan like the pirates would have after they saw Asterix & Obelix…
We, finally sat down in some form of quizzing order, with this writer taking the charge of noting the scores. KN and many others had not understand the rules properly (Another ET perhaps!!) so the onus was thrust upon the mighty shoulders of this writer one more time; and he had 3 quizzes to Bucknor upon.
“Mutrupulli“ Sridhar, who took us into the world of literature at warp-speed with his set of 40 questions, did the first quiz. It was an omnibus of English, Tamil and “what-not-type” literature posers that really did not elicit much words in the form of answers from most of the teams. Well, what I meant to say was, the questions were good and many of them went uncracked (dey writer..yenda sutti valachu pesara.neeyum ET-ya paathaya?). This quiz was won by Matti-JK-Prabhakar combo with 15 points, pipping Sana-Vinod outfit by just half a point. It was a close encounter of the third…(ada chi…Close Finish, I meant to say)
Albiet, the last quiz of his for a long time to come, it definitely is one of the best that IQL has seen so far.
Good Stuff Sridhar. We wish you all the best for your ventures.
The second quiz of the evening was a Jaldi one facilitated by Subhashree. It was a decent set of questions. Though a handful, it did really perk up the scoring. Many teams were able to score points. The deadly combo of JK-Prabhakar won this also with 6 points, leaving Patrick-Yeggy with 4 points in second place.
Yeggy obliged to conduct the final quiz of the day, as most of them did not have additional questions (did they forget or was that again a…..?). It was an eclectic mix of questions, though it bit a little hard on the F1 genre. Sriram & Sana romped home first in this quiz with 8 points with KN-Sridhar-Vishy chugging into second place.
All in all, it was a good meet, 3 good quizzes and some good time; which made all of us alongwith Duck Dodgers, Mogambo & Captain Kirk happy (don’t ask me what they were doing there…they must have been the ET..har har..)
See you next week for the second edition of the Champions League.
Watch this blog for more details.
- east meets west – samba (middle), Vinod (sitting) meet sriram

We have the next meeting of IQL at Kuppu Arcade, T.Nagar (Brio, Crossword) on Sep 27th at 4.00 pm.
All of you are expected to bring in at least 10 questions, at the meeting we would have Sridhar conducting a Literature Quiz and another person (whose name I can’t unearth) who would be doing a Business Quiz, plus the regular mini-quizzes of usual members.

(A honest review by Subhashree Srinivasan)
As I got down from the bike at Meenakshi College for Women at Kodambakkam on 22nd September, I felt like Einstein. Not his smartness or intelligence but my hair was styled the same way as his after the speedy ride.
The hospitality showered by the organizers (Lion’s Club of Madras) was overwhelming. We were informed that an inter collegiate quiz had been conducted by this prestigious club every year for a while now. We were rather proud to be part of this year’s celebrations, more so since the IQL team was to host the show.
Three of us- Priyanka, Samba and Subhashree (yours truly) squeezed ourselves into the cubicle just below the stage while Karthik Narayan was being honoured on the dais – being introduced as the Quizmaster on a stage in which the average age group would have been at least double that of KN’s! Achuthan, who contributed most of the questions, couldn’t make it to the quiz as he was caught up with work. We sorely missed his gimmicks and wisecracks…
After the welcome speech and introductory session by the Lion’s Club members, KN sprung up on the dias and commenced business. The audience was divided into “teams of two” on the right and all non participants on the left. Priyanka and me conducted the prelims, which was a written test consisting of 20 questions. A scan through the faces of the participants made us feel like employees at the US Visa counter – coz we almost knew who would make it to the finals and who wouldn’t.
The six teams on the stage were an amalgam of engineering and art college students chosen with the help of tie breaker questions (around 6 teams had the same score). My heart did a somersault as Priyanka and I compiled the scores – 4 teams comprising of girls and only 2 boys’ teams! Wow, maybe it was one of those days!! My ode to joy didn’t last long as team three comprising of Ramkumar and Harish (SVCE, these guys are hardcore quizzers) ran away with the scores. In fact in the first two rounds it seemed as if there were only three people on stage – the quizmaster, and this team.
The quiz masters for the day were KN and Samba. The first two rounds (Clockwise round of 15 questions and a written round) were taken up by KN. The first round was so slow that I think most of us aged faster than normal. This was mainly because the participants were very reluctant to even make a guess. After the initial hiccups and after what I felt was half a decade, the teams started making guesses and then the heat caught on. But by that time, the toughest round of the quiz, the written round got over. Most of the teams didn’t trouble themselves to try and score in this round.
Then Samba took charge for the last round which had mostly connects and theme based questions. Since the questions were on current affairs, even the audience got into the fray.
There is no “learning” when the entire quiz goes on smooth (lame excuse, I know). As any other show, there were some goof ups and technical problems but we managed to sort them out without much difficulty.
Special mention – Thanks to , Achu, Priyanka, Samba, KN, Raji and other members of the IQL team for the questions. Sincere thanks to the Lion’s Club and the college for the opportunity to conduct the event and generosity. We hope everyone liked the quiz.
Overall, a nearly flawless show and all of us were exhausted by the time it was over because it was one of the longest quizzes we have ever witnessed.
Winners – Ram Kumar (or kabala) and Harish from SVCE.
Runners – Aparna and Susanna from MOP Vaishnav College for Women.
I came outside and checked out my hairstyle. “No improvement”, I grumbled.
We promptly went over to Kumarakom Restaurant to gorge on some delicious Mallu food to celebrate our latest quiz and to chill out.
