A round-up of the QFI Open Main Quiz by Vinod Ganesh on June 7, 2009 Sunday at the Museum Theatre, Egmore.

The top three reasons why we should have tried harder to qualify for the QFI Open Main Quiz:

1. Seats that did not have comfort of a decent back-rest (though the Quiz kept us at the edge of our seats)

2. Lack of interesting audience prizes (whoever wants a Rs.50/- discount coupon on dilsebol orders, contact me)

3. Interesting, well researched questions that were answerable, provided you did some homework before the quiz!!

The entire Quiz was well orchestrated, even though the microphones should have been tested up-front. Most of the time the sound did not carry through, as though there was a vaccuum between the mouth and the mic. Apart from that, I thought the whole quiz came out well, without losing focus on pushing the quiz enthusiast’s curiosity on what question comes next. I know that I have personally drubbed last year’s edition as a repeat telecast of past questions, but I guess the research team had done extensive work to make this easily the best edition of the QFI Open quizzes till date.

The usual suspects did qualify and win, but the prelims helped most of us gain confidence; the cutoff was around 26 (out of 40 questions), we were told, but not many of the 200 odd people inside Museum Theatre, Egmore went back dissatisfied with either the level of the quiz or the way it was conducted. The prelims was answerable, some of us ended up getting scores of 20 and above that almost kissed the cut-off, even though not literally. Most of the questions hinged on the standard formula of today’s quizzes – current affairs, hence playing the level field.

Vinod Ganesh as Quizmaster left a good impression. It helped that he knew each one of the on-stage quizzers personally, but he carried himself very well, not losing his charm or undimming wit at any point. That was one of the prime reasons why most of the audience stayed back inspite of the long day (we had a quiz in the morning as well) and also this quiz being a tad too long (quiz started at 3.30PM and ended by 8PM).

Congrats to the winners – Samanth, Swaminathan and Jayakanthan and Runners up – Ramkumar, Ramana and Sreeram ; full credit to the research team of Vinod Ganesh, Krishnamurthy and Vikram Rajan. Take a bow, guys!!

For a quiz that ended the very long day with a feel-good feeling…
